When Rian van Emdben had the opportunity to open a brand new Battery World store in Gawler – it presented two hard to beat opportunities: a chance to be his own boss and the perfect time to bring his family home.
A born and bred local, Rian grew up in the area but left to pursue a career in the oil industry.
“My Battery World journey was quite by accident,” he says, “I injured my knee and retail work was suggested as an interim occupation to get me back in the workforce while recovering. The most important thing I have learnt in running a business is that everything hinges on customer service and being able to help people. Bad service is the bugbear of every shopper.”
Regular customers to nearby Battery World Parafield may recognise Rian: – he has worked as manager since the store opened and before that worked at Glynde Battery World.
Rian is the first graduate of the company’s ‘Rising Star’ program where staffers are mentored, given business advice and an opportunity to buy into the business.
“I have been with Battery World now for more than six years,” he said, “While the day to day running of a store keeps my busy: our focus will always be on helping customers. Often they will come in knowing they need, say a camera battery but are not quite sure which is the best and how technology may have changed since they bought a battery last. That’s where we come into our own as batteryologists.”
